Maybe a problem.

I was reading that link you posted https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+so...tion/99072 that source is for karmic and the latest LIVE is lucid. You are running the latest live right? Dharma B4

That could be the root of your problem. (Maybe, maybe not) but if you are using B4 then that is the wrong distribution source for that driver.

Remove what you did in that link. The deb sources.

Code:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

delete these lines
Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/markus-tisoft/rt3090/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/markus-tisoft/rt3090/ubuntu karmic main

I like the ppa way so thats why I asked you to delete instead of fix the dist name.

CTRL+O
enter
CTRL+X

This is where the ppa for your driver is.
https://launchpad.net/~markus-tisoft/+archive/rt3090

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:markus-tisoft/rt3090

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Code:
sudo apt-get install rt3090-dkms

Start over with post 13.

If all else fails try to just download the deb.

Earlier I had been using the above but moved to the ppa:markus
At first the ppa package could not be found so did an update, then i could do the ppa:markus and carry on with your guide then
Everything goes fine till the networking restart
End result was exactly the same as I did before following your way.
Not sure where to go from here, reinstalled it and did it your way again. Same result.
Is a static connection a better way to go?
I'm using xbmc-9.11-live-repack
It is the RT3090 wireless card that is in my revo 3610,I'm heartbroken from this. The card has worked through ubuntu 10.04.

In the guide
[HTML]http://morningbeat.blogspot.com/2010/01/xbmc-911-on-acer-aspire-revo.html[/HTML]
I had to manually delete the following:
sudo rm /var/run/wpa_supplicant/ra0
Has this some significance, I can't do remove for some reason..I use sudo and nano..etc.

I'm using the XBMC Live Camelot Stable version.
Will I use Dharma B4 instead and try again?
Another thing I find is I can't perform the lshw command, says command not found.
I'll retry all tonight and get the information you need after work.
Thanks Fishoil

Probably not what you want to hear but I had endless problems getting wifi to work properly with the Revo R3610 and xbmc. My revo came with an Atheros AGN card which never worked properly so I replaced it with an Intel 5100AGn which was a little better but still not stable and had bad connection speed.

In the end I got myself one of those mains Ethernet adaptors and haven't looked back. It was simple plug and play and 200Mbps. It saved a lot of headaches and has been 100% reliable.

That's definately what I do not want to hear!
I don't get why there is no Ralink issue with it on ubuntu and the problem is in the LIVE install.
On the Ubuntu install, I wanted to autostart XBMC but ended up losing the sound and wireless connection. I was forced into booting in Ubuntu.
I was already getting in the bits and pieces to improve the signal as in the youtube video when I would get the wireless issue resolved.

Looking at that wireless bridge solution is looking like a great and painless alternative now.

I'd prob go for this one.
Thanks for that suggestion.

I'm going to order a replacement card instead like Mexicanking14 did, seems like he had better success with a better card.
Hopefully, get things going better now. I'll update and let you know what happened in a week or two, thanks for you help Fishoil and xbmc_on_Revo.

We can get it going but you have failed to provide the requested information in at least two requests.

It does seem this card has some difficulty but it WILL WORK.

When you type out a reply include the requested information.

After some research it would seem there are a couple of options. There are known issues with this card and some funky but doable solutions.

Have a look at this bug report.

1.
You can try uninstalling the driver you have loaded and directly installing the deb for the correct version you have (karmic?) and see if it works. Markus rebuilt the driver and it may solve the issue.

Remove the driver
Code:
sudo dpkg -r rt3090-dkms

Install ppa purge to remove the source or delete the correct file under /etc/apt/sources.list.d
Code:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
Code:
sudo ppa-purge ppa:markus-tisoft/rt3090

Download the deb for karmic (you do have karmic right?)
Code:
wget https://launchpad.net/~markus-tisoft/+archive/rt3090/+files/rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb

Install the driver for karmic
Code:
sudo dpkg -i rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb

2.
You can try using a lucid version of XBMC and creating the fake file like in post 21 of the bug report and see if that works. People seem to have good success with this method.

If you do decide to go this route (I did with the ZOTAC MAG crappy wireless) I bought this card for $10 ($17 now). A very minor tweak it its a done deal.

I do what you said in the above thread this evening. It's 9.11 Camelot repack and is based on Ubuntu Karmic so I'm safe there.

I went with Mexicanking14's choice.
Quote:Next suggestion u may not like it- get a new pcie mini network card- I bought one for my acer revo Intel wifi 5100- it works on 5gHz and can connect upto 300Mbps in windows- it costed me approx Euros 9 including shipping. And u dont need to install a driver- its already available on the xbmc package. I was not very happy with the ralink as the max connection in windows was 65Mbps and could not stream 1080P videos in xbmc. But since I have the new network card, has no problem at all.
If it is true and the drivers are already in the xbmc package and should make it easy to get up and going...I hope!

The one thing that I was scratching my head over was the wireless card, it says it a products: RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe in the lshw. Is this correct??
In the company specs it says 802.11b/g so I decided to future proof and upgrade it to at least 802.11n with the new card that Mexicanking14 suggested.
