How to fix sound issues?
#1
Hi,
I dont get any sound, no matter if I am playing videos, mp3s, or menu sounds.
XBMC says my soundcard cannot be initialized. Where can I find information, to find out why it doesnt work? What would be the appropriate steps?

- 4Gb USB Stick as hard drive
- AMD Phenom XII 235e
- 4Gb ram
- Biostar GF8200C M2+
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/cont...p?S_ID=420
- Intel Gbit NIC
- DVD-Rom
- tevii s470

XBMC live is used.
Ubuntu 10.04.
audio is connected via analog connection.
Video is connected via DVI->HDMI->TV.
graphic driver is still the one, that comes with xbmc live 195.xx
A tevii s470 is installed, but no drivers yet.

What else is needed to know? any log files?

Please play a video first, then post a debug log from that.

Post the output of "aplay -L" please.
Also, that log shows no problems with audio at all.

It works now. For everyone interested:
I heard cracks right before xbmc started and wasnt able to find any sign in the log.
In a last attempt I just added
ppa:yavdr/unstable-xbmc
ppa:yavdr/unstable-vdr

This is basically made for pvr support but it also fixes my sound problems.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The following NEW packages will be installed:
libva1 sqlite3
The following packages will be upgraded:
dkms liblircclient0 libvdpau1 lirc nvidia-current nvidia-settings xbmc xbmc-bin xbmc-data xbmc-live
xbmc-skin-confluence xbmc-standalone

I didnt change any settings.
As can be seen above, it might have been a problem with either the driver or xbmc itself.

it stoped working after night. This is getting unnerving.

I collected some data:

XBMC setup without working sound:
tested with speaker-test too
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=487548...8553ecdf86

Kubuntu Live CD with working sound:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=38b67b...ca79f4b8ba

XBMC setup without working sound but with pulseaudio installed:

Please help me, i am getting nuts with this problem, I even changed my sound card from internal to Asus Xonar D1 (bought a new one) attached is a TV that is HDMI audio capable but my mainboard only offers a dvi plug. I added an adapter DVI->HDMI maybe this is mixing things up?

I have exactly the same problem... (I also use a Xonar D1 and analog audio)

When I first installed XBMC live (Dharma Final), it worked great, everything was fine and I could get 5.1 analog audio.

Suddenly the next day I got no menu sounds and got "Failed to initialize your sound card" msg when trying to play back a movie.

I then played around with a few settings in alsamixer, muting and unmuting certain outputs, deleted the asound.conf file, rebooted and it was working again!

Then, about a day or 2 later, i got the "failed to initialize" msg again.

I dont know whats going on but at least I can see now that I'm not alone!

I have an nvidia g210 thats got a built in sound processor so I'm wondering if the "dual sound card setup" could be whats causing this?

I'll post some debug information when I get a minute.

MY SPECS:
-------------

nvidia g210 DVI -> HDMI
Xonar D1 - 5.1 analog
Dell 745 with 4GB mem
XBMC Live 10.10

I have a Xonar ST and am experiencing the same problem. It usually occurs when I first boot the media centre (8 times out of ten). If I then immedietely do a reboot it works fine everytime, without fiddling with any alsa settings etc. No idea why - but it may work for others.

I too solved mine in a similar manner using this guide:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

Scroll down to the heading 'Configuring default soundcards / stopping multiple soundcards from switching'.
