Failure when playing high bitrate mpeg2 1080i on Nvidia ION
#1
Dear all,

Up till now I've been quite happy with my ION box for XBMC. However today I tried to play a 1080i MPEG2 video captured from HDTV (avg 12.8 Mbps) and it didn't play smoothly using DXVA decoding!!!

A little investigation showed that playing this video sends the gpu load to 100%. I've never seen that before with 1080p x264 mkv's (granted they run at much lower bitrates).

Can anyone recomend any "tweaks" or any other way of playing this smoothly on my system. When I looked ION specs at nvidia, I didn't see any mention of maximum supported bitrates, only that it decodes 1080p videos. Talk about not giving complete info.

Help!

wow that seems way off my utilization on the ion gpu is like 30% or something.. with mythtv 1080i captures via hdhomerun
are you looking at it with: nvidia-smi -a
(assuming your running linux, if windows then i have no idea)

It might be an interesting experiment to recode the video to a lower bitrate and see what happens. Presumably there is a limit to the ability of the GPU to decode video, though as far as I know no-one has mentioned it here.
