Picture Quality

Hi,

Prehaps someone can shed some light for me....

Generally, I think the picture quality is very good....but

Whatever files I play, I notice alot of on-screen noise, esecially in dark scenes (some blacks also seem to have a blue tinge to them). These files played back with no problems on the same hardware under win7.....but I do prefer XBMC live, so hoping I can get this sorted.

This happens on both SD (avi, h.264) and high quality HD MKV/AVI's (h.264).

My setup in an Acer Revo ION 3600, XBMC 10.00 (Xbmcfreak LiveCD 10.00 maverick v3 - minimal Ubuntu install), Nvidia 260.12.29 drivers, VDPAU enabled, sharpening and noise reduction as fault.

Anyone have this, or know how to sort it out?

Cheers

K

EDIT - should add xorg.conf is set at 24 colour depth (I can post the conf is that helps), as I dont think linux supports 32.

UPDATE - sorted......pq is now just about perfect (a term I don't use lightly)....then used the gtf command (eg - gtf 1920 1080 24) and modded my xorg.conf - playback is now as SMOOTH as SILK too!!.

Thanks to the devs for one amazing app.

The GTF command gets the right info for res and resfresh rates to eliminate judder....

As an example, for 1080p@24hz, simply type "gtf 1920 1080 24" in the terminal, and in my case it shows:

1920x1080 @ 24.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 26.28 kHz; pclk: 61.81 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_24.00" 61.81 1920 1944 2136 2352 1080 1081 1084 1095 -HSync +Vsync

Then use this info to modify your xorg.conf.....so it looks like:

ModeLine "1920x1080@24p" 61.81 1920 1944 2136 2352 1080 1081 1084 1095 +hsync +vsync

Do the same for all suppored res.

The solution for me was updating the nvidia drivers and setting the right info in xorg.conf.

Here's mine. Been this way for quite a while. Please note that my HDTV is slightly older and doesn't handle 1080p 24Hz properly.
