Note that I have a 1st gen Asrock with no BD drive or remote receiver. Here's my aplay -L which from an SSH prompt seems much more detailed then when done from a shell on the box...

6 channel Speaker-test for HDMI works when I use hw:0,3 or plughw:0,3 or xxx:NVidia0,3 however when any of those strings is used in XBMC (from Git or stable PPA) on Ubuntu 10.10 I get errors in the console and no sound along with various errors in XBMC when playing audio that should be passed through like AC3 or DTS. I think hw:hdmi,3 also works but I'm fuzzy there. On older versions of Ubuntu I was able to use hdmi as passthru device. I'm stumped!

Anyway, I hope that this is helpful just please note that there could be a hardware difference. I have Zotac IONs too if you want to see that to compare - same issue with sound on the one running Ubuntu 10.10...
