Sam has posted some of his AppleTV 1 linux images on his site so I tried out the installer and it worked a treat. Maybe I'm jumping the gun as it required a change in the initialise.sh script to point at the ubuntu.sh but everything seems to work okay.
The only issue I'm having is that it does not seem to automatically mount any attached USB drives which is essential as the person I'm giving this to just uses a USB hard drive. I tried attaching a USB hub but it made no difference although it's the only one I have and it never worked ever with the ATV so I'll see about getting a second one just in case.
If possible does anyone know how to get USB drives automatically mounted ?

Update: Sam's linux image doesn't support this it seems so I never did find a fix (editing fstab didn't work either) but it turns out the other linux distro OpenElec for the ATV works fine with auto mounting drives.
