Change resolution to 720p?

i have a similar problem with my xbox. i've got a x2vga hooked to a monitor and i am trying to get 720p in a 4x3 aspect ratio. my log file looks like this...

everything i have tried has failed. maybe it is that xbmc only supports 720p in widescreen. any help please.

what is the big deal about hdtv settings? are you guys able to watch hdtv movies? i am not too concern about playing games in hd but movies---yes. :kickass:

hey!
i've got the same problem, got the hdtv pack (3 component videso and 2 rca audios) got it for 90 bucks or soo and i want to be able to use them. i am 100% sure my tv supports hdtv (its a sony 46" widescreen)

now the thing is, i cant get into ms dash from evox, when i try to load ms dash it just freezes on me Sad

what can i do? i tried unleashx it has options for 1080i and 720p but even if i save it and load xbmc again, xbmc doenst show anything just auto and ntsc 4:3.

edit:

heres my log Confused something weird...

just bumping this, as an xbox owner using evox and xbmc, which can't get into the ms dashboard to change to 16:9 and enable 480p (just got a new tv that does 480p/1080i).

my roommate who did the mod oiriginally thinks we can put an original ms image back on the drive and boot to the dashboard that way, but is worried it might not boot when we restart.

any ideas how to get into the ms dashboard? (right now it just locks up with the green grid background).

by the way the reason we desire to do this is because the xbox seems to be outputting at 480i while our tv only supports 480p, thus images produced by xbmc, dvds and games look really bad, unplayable.

a casual look at the last six or so posts shows that they all have the save problems and even worse, the problems are clearly listed in the log files.

people: no more questions. you need the following things.

1. an hdtv pack
2. to go into the ms dash and enable all modes that your hdtv can cope with. if you cannot get into the ms dash then take your discussion off this forum and over to the xbox-scene forum. note: pal xboxes do not support hdtv modes but you can change your xbox to ntsc. see the xbox-scene forums.
3. that's it. start xbmc, select the resultion of your choice and be happy.

ok, let's sum up everyone's problems:

obmarg: cannot get into ms dash
mau108: cannot get into ms dash "notice av flags:" (i.e. not set up)
xconvert: is just confused. oridinary movies in hires look great in hdtv modes.
jarbs: is trying hdtv in non-hdtv aspects. i hear that you can get xbmc to squeeze the 720p pic to suit 4:3 but why?
sd00: has it down Nod
pazor: doesn't have an hdtv pack "notice av pack: scart"
videoguy: also needs his ms dash...

to those who can't get in to msdash to change their resolution settings:

try uix. iirc, it has video mode settings.
#23
heres how i did it,

load up avalaunch as an application from xbmc, allowed eeprom writeback and unlocked the harddrive (i believe with another tool) changed the settings under video in avalaaunch saved, disabled eeeprom writeback and locked the harddrive then rebooted and voila its there Smile
#24
yes that is how i to get hd output thru avalaunch.

anomaly, you are too judgmental. what is the big deal about gaming in hd. as a person who is used to gaming on a computer at 1600x1200, gaming at 720p is blah blah. hdtv on the otherhand is the new thing for me. it may not be the same for you but to each his own.

(anomaly @ feb. 03 2005,01:26 Wrote:hi. this is an extremely common question.

1. you need to have a hdtv pack (component video cables) attached to your xbox.
2. you need to enable the 720p and 1080i modes in the microsoft dash settings screen (assuming your tv supports these).
3. then, and only then will you be able to select the hdtv modes in xbmc.

cheers.
should this work on a uk xbox too?

i have the componet out box and a pj that runs at 1280x720.

the componet out box also has a scart connetor - although i don't know what my widescreen tv will do if its connected, i'd like the ability to switch betweem using the tv for the kids games and the pj for xbmc.
#26
the component out box with scart is not an hdtv pack. i don't know if this adapter of yours enables the hdtv modes. fairly easy to check though.

however, as yours is a uk xbox, it will currently be set up in pal mode. the xbox has to be in ntsc mode to output hdtv signals.

the fact that your projector "runs at 1280x720" *might* mean it supports hdtv modes, but it's best to check. forget the resolution figures, look for the mention of 480p, 720p and 1080i support.

if your projector supports any of these hdtv modes (480p, 720p, 1080i) then you should be fine. switching between pal/ntsc modes can be tricky if you have no way to view ntsc or hdtv video and have to change it back to pal. also note that true pal hdtv has a different vertical frequency (50hz) as opposed to the 60hz output by the xbox. blame ms for not supporting pal hdtv frequencies...

anyway, check if your adapter supports hdtv first.
#27
the pj does support all the hdtv modes so that wont be a problem.

the adapter box is one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws....55&rd=1

so if i understand things correctly i need to set the box to ntsc (my tv will accept a ntsc signal via scart) and then i will get the options for higher quality settings - ie 720p and should see a significant increase in image quality?

what resolution does the std xbox run at? what will it run at in hdtv mode?

thanks

ok, let's go through it step by step. i plan on using this as a basis for the online manual, so please help by pointing out anything that you did that caused problems, and providing any extra info you can.

steps are:

1. set xbox to ntsc mode. you might be able to do this in your modchip's os, otherwise, there are many tools to do this - look on xbox-scene for instance. (todo - supply a list of tools to do this, and info on how to recover) note that you must have a device that can view ntsc. make sure you avoid ntsc-j mode unless your tv supports it (many pal tvs don't - they support only ntsc-m).

2. plug in the hdtv pack.

3. boot into the ms dash (or an ms dash equivalent such as uix)

4. go into video settings. if you have a true hdtv pack plugged in, it will have options for enabling 480p, 720p and 1080i modes. if you don't have these options, you don't have an hdtv pack. (todo: add information on what to do if the tv you are connecting to can't handle 480i (ntsc) signals - there's a progressive ms dash button combo i believe.)

5. enable only the modes your output device supports.

6. reboot and run xbmc. you can now choose the resolution in settings->appearance. selecting "auto" for resolution will run xbmc in the highest possible resolution. it is strongly suggested that you do not run higher than 720p due to memory constraints, though it will work in 1080i, memory is very low and it may cause problems with video playback.

info on resolutions:

1080i: 1920x1080, 16x9 (interlaced)
720p: 1280x720, 16x9 (progressive)
480p: 720x480, 16x9 or 4x3 (progressive)
ntsc: 720x480, 16x9 or 4x3 (interlaced)
pal: 720x576, 16x9 or 4x3 (interlaced)
pal60: 720x480, 16x9 or 4x3 (interlaced)

cheers,
jonathan

it doesn't say anywhere that that specific adapter supports 720p (nor 480p or 1080i, all it sais is that is supports rgb component and that it is a "high definition av pack", now that doesn't mean it supports hdtv resolutions (720p/1080i), in fact i very much doubt that is does because it has coax and s-video ports too and those can never handle hdtv resolutions (and rgb component adapters/mode is also available for 480i/576i), ...you will know after you enable ntsc as the 720p and 1080i hdtv options will not be available in microsoft dashboard settings if the adapter-cable do not support it.

(smiffy @ july 07 2005,10:44 Wrote:what resolution does the std xbox run at? what will it run at in hdtv mode?
for non-hdtv: 480i (720x480 interlaced) for ntsc, and 576i (720x576 interlaced) for pal.
