Just experienced XBMC freezing up my machine during playback
#1
Hi,

I'm regularly having trouble with XBMC suddenly taking up 100% of the CPU, it makes Ubuntu freeze as well... or as a friend of mine stated "I've got a zombie".
It usually happens after more than 60 minutes of playback. Suddenly I see some weird lightgreen artefacts on the screen, video freezes and then the sounds starts looping with a length of approximately 2 - 3 seconds. Unable to move mouse, cannot stop XBMC, not even killing it from a remote terminal (in the rare case I manage to log in remotely). Even sudo shutdown does nothing.

There are definitely some errors getting reported in the log file, but I am unsure as to whether they point to the actual reason for XBMC freezing up.

Looking forward towards your opinions and help!

Here's the details:

Linux Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, 2.6.32-28-generic-pae i686. Built on Dec 17 2010 (SVN:35648)
Architecture: i686
Install Method: Followed this guide http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title...-by-Step_Guide
SVN: XBMC 10.0 r35648 (Compiled 17 dec 2010)
Instructions to reproduce: **IF** the crash happens, it will happen seconds after pausing playback. The crash is so serious it makes ubuntu hang. Impossible to approach the machine from outside via SSL. Nor does Ctrl Alt F8 start a terminal. I really need to do a hard reset and I hate doing that. Worried about harddrives and data possibly getting corrupted. Usually the freeze happens after 60 minutes of playback and pausing unpausing several times.

I am also noticing something similar on my Zotac HD11 with Ubuntu 10.1 x86 and XBMC 10.1 (latest stable build) installed. I built the PC recently using (http://www.contentwhores.com/wordpress/?page_id=484)

Although I see no green artefacts on the screen after between 15-30 minutes of playback the playback will slow down to ~5 frames a second and loop about 2 seconds of audio. With logging enabled I notice that while this is happening one of the cores (of 3) is maxed out at 100%. The freeze will last around 10 seconds to 1 minutes then the core usage drops back to normal and playback resumes with overall cpu usage no higher than 30%.

This will happen in my experience at increasing frequency throughout the SD video playback .

This is a link to the XBMC log if it helps fix both of our similar issues.

I appreciate any help people can provide!Smile

Hmm, I missed this on the first post, but the issue, and actually even more so your issue Mickpunt, looks similar to the one reported here http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=85070

and also post 207 here

Oookay, One thing I notice that we all share (Joelones in topic 85070 and Mickpunt above) is the following error in our xbmc log files

ERROR: Unable to load libcrystalhd.so.3, reason: libcrystalhd.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Alternatively I also notice we are all getting a lot of CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuty" errors. One thing worth following up as per post 12 here http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=48114&page=2 'Mickpunt' do you have both video and audio running out of HDMI?

nothing from anyone? That's a shame. Time to throw my PC away and take up abstract watercolor painting....or perhaps on a more practical note start again (ouch) using openelec as a base as people seem to have less issues with playback on this platform. I'll feed back I guess how I get on (still time to stop me if anyone has any suggestions though)
