I have recently installed XBMC Live 10.1, but I can't get it to run.

copy the output of ~/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log and put it into a pastebin and post the pastebin URL here.

Log in again and type:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall xinit x11-xserver-utils xbmc-live

well....the most common reason for this is broken or missing driver for graphical card.
Maybe tell him to check that first.
