I don't get it. We didn't do anything, and it just gets back to 1920x1080?
What the *** is going on here?
The only 'thing' I did was I installed Kodi again because SPMC wouldn't play embedded subtitles.

Maybe both programs conflict with each other??
Update:
It seems Kodi does affect SPMC when both installed. I uninstalled Kodi and SPMC works again at 3840x2160.

I had to uninstall both Kodi and SPMC
Then restart Shield TV
then install SPMC and it worked without any changing any settings.
Hopefully this stays working

The 'adjust refresh rate' - always fixes this problem for me in SPMC, i can watch the koying test sample video in 4k. however this screws up audio. i get different delays on every type of audio stream. its impossible to adjust.

I will try this evening but i'm quite sure that I have this setting in SPMC regarding adjust refresh rate.
My GUI still working at 1080p also setting unlimited
This are my settings
Videos > Playback
• adjust display refresh rate = always
• sync playback to display = off
Videos > Acceleration
• enable HQ scalers = low
• allow hardware acceleration - Mediacodec (Surface) = on
• allow hardware acceleration - Mediacodec = on
• accelerate MPEG2 = HD and up
• accelerate MPEG4 = HD and up
• accelerate h264 = HD and up
System > Video Output
• set GUI resolution limit = unlimited
• vertical blank sync = always enabled

having the same problem, i understand that it *kind* of works with the SPMC version, but does kodi 17 plan to implement 4k?
also, does anyone notice the diff between watching a 4k movie at 1080p, and watching a 4k movie at native 2160p?

I do have the same problem. Settings are same as you mentioned and KODI/SPMC display the content in 1080 even though Shield is set to 4K!
But interestingly what I noticed is if you restart the Shield (from setting or power cycle) by keeping the TV and HT (if there is one) ON, SPMC comes back with 4K. I have been doing this for a while and all the time it worked for me. It is a really annoying thing though..!! I am thinking it might be an integration issue between Shield and SPMC. There is something SMPC is looking for other than the HDMI setting we could see in Shield and that parameter is not getting enabled if the Shield output doesn't detect a 4K device at the time of boot up. Since the boot time of Shield is much faster than my HT, this happens. I hope both KODI and Nvidia work on it and get it fixed in the next firmware.
I request you all to check the same and if you find as working, let us put some pressure on these OEMs ;-)

This issue is back again on Kodi 17.1 and SPMC 16.6!
Is there any setting to address it?

The very first thing to do is make sure you have a 4K - 2160p50/60Hz etc Display Resolution selected in Android Settings first ?
Make Sure Auto is not selected.

Yes. I can confirm that it's not selected to Auto. I did try with both 2160/50 and 60. Nothing to set on TV though

I totally suffer from the same issue. I'm quite surprised that no one could bring a good solution yet. I also wonder that is there anyone who watches 4K movies without any issue
My sistem is Kodi 17.1, Nvida Shield TV, JVC RS-400 Projector, Pioneer SC-LX59 AVR. All cables with system supports 4K-60hz-4:4:4. Nvidia Shield TV is always set to 4K-60hz in any case)
Anyway, my problem is quite same but let me explain once more. Because it's really strange. I'm having 2 type of issues.
1st issue- When i open Kodi i notice that Screen Resolution is greyed out and fixed to 1920x1080. There's no way of changing it. When this happens i get the same issue 3840x2160 ->1920x1080. So, Kodi downscales 4K to 1080p according to this.
2nd issue- I'm not totally sure, when the system reaches this phase. Probably after i hard-shutdown the Nvidia Shield. So, when this happens Resolution Change section is open and i can set it 3840x2160 or leave it 1920x1080p. Anyway, i leave it still with 1920x1080. Then i start a 4K movie. And this time projector switches to 4K-24hz automatically. When i check the info screen I see 3840x2160 => 3840x2160. We may assume that everything is allright now.
But i don't think it is. Because when i start a 1080p movie, projector switches to 4K-24hz again. Info screen says 1920x1080=>1920x1080 but i'm still not satisfied. Because projector shouldn't switch to 4K-24hz while watching a 1080p movie.
So, i came up an opinion that, Kodi makes an upscale for 1080p movie. For 4K it downscales to 1080p and then make an upscale again which causes a non-correct 4K view.
So, i'm totally confused with it. I believe whatever i do, Kodi can't play native 4K movies in all my cases. What should be the fix
? Is there anyone who can play 4K movies properly with Kodi?
