Strange humming noise from hard disk
#1
Hello

I'm using XBMC as standalone application on Arch linux box.

There is a humming noise coming out from the hard disk.

But the problem occurs ONLY when picture files from Pictures menu are loading.

Is there anyone with the same problem?

Hm, but I built my HTPC just 1 week ago.

I can't believe that my brand new hard disk is defective.

(If I have to buy new one, I will use Clonezilla to clone whole the hard disk. This HTPC is home server, too.)

I'll try Norton ghost to heal my hard disk

Why not just clone it and RMA it to be safe?

Yes, I want to clone it, but why not use Clonezilla?

I don't understand what you suggest.

What is RMA ?

RMA (Return-Merchandise-Authorization) means that you give your Harddrive back where you buyed it by using your Garanty / Warranty.
Clonezilla Live CD is good for copying a whole System.

Most online vendors that I have bought items from in the past usually have a 30 day window after purchase where you can return the item for replacement/refund. Once you are outside that 30 day window then you'd have to contact the item manufacturer of the hard drive to get a warranty replacement ifthe drive is defective.

My local seller said that that noise is normal for this manufacturer, because these models of HDD are fast.

He suggests I could use this tool to reduce acoustic noise if the later is too loud, and he also said that hard disk is not defective.

Clone and dump. Well I'd at least clone to be safe.
