I want to put kodi on a Fire TV with just a HDD, no network (in car)

I just picked up a AFTV that is brand new and supposedly rootable (2014 model). What I want to do is to use it in my car with an attached 2TB HDD and Kodi. Is this possible? Can a FTV work without a network connection? should I root this box? Is it necessary to update it in order to see a large attached HDD? Before I do anything I want to find out what I would need to do in order to use this the way I want. Since the newer FTV's are not rootable, not many people are talking about rooting any more, so I'm not even sure what I should do. Any help is appreciated.

If things have not changed, you can get the HDD working by rooting and installing StickMount or upgrade to the newer firmware. I do not know if things have changed since. Source

As for the fire TV without an Internet connection, It will try to connect at startup so their may be a delay at least. You'd have to have someone who owns a Fire TV try (or when you get it).
