NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box)
(2016-08-21, 03:00)wesk05 Wrote: [...] I can tell you that Shield will fail on 3D MVC (MKV or ISO). The Shield natively supports hi-res audio, but it will fail in Kodi or SPMC.
3D MVC fails but MVC works, right?
Btw, I'm wondering if Plex in this can come in handy. Could it be used to retranscode everything that is not directly supported for playback (with some lack of quality of course)?

And about hi-res audio, sorry for my ignorance, but do you mean audio only? In that case I wouldn't care. Instead, if it used with DTS or Dolby it would be a problem. Would you help me understand? May I ask you to elaborate a little bit here? Blush

@ couto27 and SilverBlade

Honestly, I can still use my TV native app for Netflix, I own a LG 55EF950 and it supports 4K and recently also HDR.
Still, I'd like to watch my library with SPMC without compromise. Cool

Speaking about hdmkv complains, I'm afraid that what is supposed to be a better image quality for the Q5/10 pro is just the video enhancer that can't be turned off.

Any judder should not appear if, as wesk05 tested, the frequency is always in sync between video and output. Than it's about the TV to display it properly. Here what he said:

2) is Kodi dynamic 23.976/29.97.59.94fps refresh rate switching working properly ?
1) All of them are working properly. I have not noticed any stutter with 4K or 1080p.
2) Refresh rate switching works fine if AVR and display are both HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 compliant.

Thanks all for your feedback. I'm about to buy a Shield, then. Big Grin

Mmm... You don't see to have a clear idea of what MVC is, do you? MVC is only for 3D Wink
I doubt Plex can decode MVC, either, as there is no practical open-source software implementation.
I thought it was a profile like baseline, main, HiP, etc. So... is MVC used on all 3D Blu-rays? Why is it so important? Sorry, maybe I'm off topic...

I actually went ahead and preordered a Wetek Play 2, which will release in early Sept. The support for bugs/issues from Wetek is way better than NV it seems like.

For me the Shield still doesnt do auto-framerate switching properly in SPMC etc. and has some other bugs.

Yes the Wetek doesnt Support Netflix 4k with more than stereo (yet), but as iV1n5 mentioned- most 4k TVs have a native App that supports it or will support in the future. Another thing is that the Netflix 4k is just some low-bitrage gargabe that doesnt even look better than 1080p when you compare it directly.

I mean its no suprise as well, when Netfix 4k content is encoded at 14-16 Mbit most of the time.

Plus I dont even consider Netflix to be a must-have App with full 4K support for a Media Player. While its nice to have for those who actually use it, I still consider my own library 50x more important than what Netflix offers and the quality of Blurays or proper Encodes is still significantly better than those shit streams at 6 Mbit/s for 1080p on Netflix. Not to mention most of the time, the quality of Blurays is even better when upscaled to 4k, when comparing directly to 4k Netflix streams.
Wait, what is not switching right under spmc. I have not noticed any judder from ripped blue rays. As of 16.3 EVEN ATMOS works!

Using on 2014 vizio 65 M

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant is Shield will not decode 3D MVC. The playback will be in 2D only. As for Hi-Res audio, it applies to 24-bit 96/192kHz FLAC, PCM etc. It doesn't affect passthrough audio. All Dolby Digital/DTS codecs are good in passthrough mode.

I should clarify this statement. Refresh rate switching works fine if the AVR has the same HDMI/HDCP version as the display. If the display is 1.x, then the AVR should also be 1.x. It won't work if the display is 1.x and the AVR is 2.x
Actually you did make that clarification. I cut it away in the quote, sorry.

Thanks again for the reply, wesk05. Thanks to your comments I decided to go buying the Shield.

See you soon on these pages! Wink

Really, really hope this means MrMC for the shield is on its way.
Shield already got Kodi and spmc, and they are free. Why the hell would anyone want a crippled fork that costs money?
I wouldn't use such harsh words, but I'm indeed curious how MrMC would fare in an environment with actual competition from store Wink

Because that fork already has new features not in Kodi or SPMC?

As more time goes on, MrMC becomes more and more its own thing. Really, take a look at the changelog and github commits. It's a different app who's main target is non-add-on use (non-vital enough to drop python for the sake of a better system, and to meet requirements for certain app stores). In the long run, a replacement for Python add-ons is in the works that sounds amazing, and hopefully is something Kodi adopts as well.

You can even compile it for free. Or someone else can, and then give it away. It's open source.

I don't really use it daily, but only because I don't currently need to. If I had to use it, MrMC would fit 90% of my daily needs, and probably all of my family's needs. With the path that MrMC is on, I honestly look forward to where it is going.
Just to be clear: No sugar coating does not equal any intended harshness/flaming.
In the eyes of a Kodi user (we are on Kodi forums after all), it is what it is: a crippled fork.
Yeah I know I can compile it and even sell it under another name on app store etc. I know how this worksSmile
It might someday evolve to the Skynet of media players. Until then, it's a crippled Kodi fork that still pulls from mainline. Of course ymmv.
