Asus Chromebox announcement

Wouldn't you need a non-UEFI version to boot from SEABIOS - that's there to boot legacy images?
Anyone in the UK got wind of this device as yet? - I've been looking... but nothing.

But I went to turn it on again last night and got nothing. The light comes on no video. I did take out the bios screw and replaced the ram. I haven't had a chance to see if the ram is the issue by swapping it back to the original. However, if it is ram, most computers will post an error. Any thoughts? Thanks

I put the original memory back in last night and it's works normally again. So I guess this like box doesn't do post if there is an error. I just does nothing. Guess I'll have to buy some ram since the ones I have don't seem to play nice on this device Sad

except that there isn't/won't be an x86 version of Android that boots via legacy BIOS.

Right i just wanted to give it a go. im willing to try anything to make xbmc or plex media server experience better but so far no good eather dual booting chromeOS with Openelect sometimes freezes.
Is it possible to have Frodo 12.3 , if so what should i do to downgrade as many things are incompatible and i like the eye candy of the skins. it getting on my nerves
My XBMC/Kodi folder: addons, skins, addon/menu backgrounds & more
RE: External DAC under OpenELEC:

Schiit says: "no experience with that configuration—but most intel-based Chromebooks work fine."

Is guess that is a good sign?! Anyone tried this DAC (Schiit Gungnir) or any other external USB DAC?

Sounds like you should be OK then

Why didn't Asus/Google put a regular UEFI bios on these things? It would've been cheaper and just as secure. Were they afraid people would hack the boxes (which they'll do anyway)?

I wish Asus would release a version with UEFI + CIR ($2 part) targeted at HTPC market. It would certainly sell and its not like they don't have a 1000 versions of each of their products already.

Yes. The 32-bit version leaves a little over 7 gigs on a fresh install after disabling hibernate.

I'm not able to get the Intel HDMI audio working, however (using Intel Graphics Driver Package 15.33.18.3496). The Realtek audio jack works fine with the Realtek drivers for NUC, and that's all I really need for this bedroom TV, but it'd be nice to have HDMI working.

Oddly, Intel Display Audio appears in the Device Manager with no errors, but never shows up in Playback Devices.

Any news on that Eagle ? How did you manage to install window on the chromebox ?
Is anybody having audio problems on 13.10? I can consistently reproduce intermittent crackling and popping (i.e. the audio crackles for a second every 10 to 30 seconds.) over the HDMI audio interface. It almost sounds like the audio is clipping, but neither the TV nor the audio interface is being overdriven. I see there are common issues with snd-hda-intel and HDMI audio output on linux, but all the fixes I've found by googling haven't worked. I'm going to see if it works better on 14.04, but I'd prefer to use 13.10 since the intel graphics driver on 14.04 reportedly has tearing issues.

I've tried adding tsched=0 to the module-udev-detect in /etc/pulse/default.pa
I've also tried the intel position fix in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.
All combinations of those don't seem to fix the issue.
I know it's not a hardware issue because youtube videos in ChromeOS work fine with no crackle.

I'll do more digging on this myself. If I find anything I'll post back in this thread for the benefit of everybody else.

Fixing the tearing on the intel driver is documented on the Arch Wiki

Intel Graphics: Tear-Free Video

The SNA acceleration method causes tearing for some people. To fix this, enable the "Tearfree" option in the driver:

Code:
sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "TearFree"    "true"
EndSection

After rebooting this fixed the tearing on my Ivy Bridge on Ubuntu 12.04+. I'm using Xubuntu 14.04 now.
@eccramer
Did you try to get rid of pulseaudio and use alsa directly?

@tetsuya

With xubuntu14.04 I had extremly long boot up time. It was getting stuck on "switched to clocksource tsc".
I did some reding and tried to fix it but with no luck.

Are you experiencing same issue?

I set VLC to use ALSA directly and pointed ALSA to the HDMI output. Same clipping issue, and when I stop the video the audio squeals until I killall pulseaudio.

HOWEVER, when I did an upgrade to 14.04 through Ubuntu Software Update, the audio clipping issue went away. Unfortunately the update failed to complete, so some other things are slightly bent, and it spawns multiple "An error occurred" dialogs after login. Also, all of the window animations run horribly, painfully, criminally slow. I turned them off through unity tweak tool, but it's clear that something broke and I need to reinstall.

I think I'm going to try a wipe and reinstall to 14.04, and apply the tearing fix that tetsuya mentioned. Hopefully graphics performance will be acceptable under 14.04.

I just recieved my Chromebox a few hours ago and haven't had anytime to unbox it and mess around with it yet. I plan to do everthing tomorrow when I have time and I'll see how everything goes. I haven't had any problems with my sound on my I3-3225 or my G3220.
The only problems I had on those two systems was with the tearing and I fixed from the instructions on the Arch Wiki.
