The only way to solve this one is a big change. The overlay rendering is simply too complex to get done in time on the hardware being used. Solution/improvement therefore is possibly
1) to break up the work into separate threads and/or
2) see if there is some way to reduce the processing requirement by being more efficient somewhere and/or
3) to do the overlays work in a separate thread that will not hold up render thread when the overlay work is late to deliver (resulting in overlay data being drawn later than it should be).
I think the last one should ideally be implemented regardless, as it would immediately stop video stutter related to overlays.
Don't expect any solution in the short term though.

I am wondering why everyone is seeming to be convinced of the judder problem to be software related. Isn't it more likely, after months of tweaking and fine-tuning, that the problem is hardware related ?
I'm on Asrock ion 330 ht and the most convincing post I've read until now is the assumption that the balance between the CPU and GPU processing power is way off, and is causing the problem.
Responsible for this non-balance might be a bottleneck which I think is not the the GPU or CPU, but the installed ram people are using. Maybe installing expensive quality ram memory, with perhaps 4 GB, would solve the problem, and might give the CPU space to take over some of the work the GPU is processing now.
Is there anyone here on an ION platform using the highest amount of ram memory possible ?
I yes, what are your findings ?
Is the CPU still running on a low percentage or is the CPU power increased, compared to a low ram memory system ?

I'm now using the newest official eden build of openelec and I must admit it is a huge improvement. It's almost completely in sync at moments but it still drop some frames time by time.
Could hardware be a improvement ? If someone has experience with extra installed ram please let me know. I'm considering to upgrade my device with more memory but I want to be sure before I buy it.

No, cause they are still testing it. They haven't gotten to the bottom of it just yet.
Samsung ES7005 55" led tv - Denon AVR-3313 - NAD C275BEE - B&W DM683 - B&W HTM61 - B&W 686
Intel NUC D34010WYK - 128GB Crucial ssd, Built in IR Receiver
And a Logitech Harmony Touch to control it all.

Just tested openelec eden build from 111111 and could not reproduce the crash on 720p/1080p .mkv @23.978hz, fixed or only luck?
