XBMC Hangs and won't release screen
#1
I have been struggling to figure out why XBMC wants to hang on occassion. XBMC becomes totally un responsive and I can't bring up the task manager.

The system is still there as I have created an EventGhost macro to kill xbmc and that usually works. XBMC disappears and the decktop is back. SYstem seems to behave normally

A cursory look at the log file doesn't seem to indicate there is anything special going on. The last line in the file is

stop Python

v10.0 and 10.1 have a bug (or bugs) that can can cause a hang on shutdown. It only seems to afflict a minority of users (which is not that much comfort if you're in that minority!).

It would be worth trying the most recent nightly build from http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/win32/ as at least some of the bugs have been fixed. Export/back up your database first though, as the recent builds will upgrade the database version to one that Dharma can't read.

I think I have this problem too. it started with the nightly builds from about a week ago.
I also think it's something with the recently plugin, i noticed that when using skin like night or neon that have the recently right on the homescreen XBMC hangs. so now i switch to refocus and all working again.

it's a known issue:

I don't mind trying the nightly build but the problem isn't reproducable enough to know if there has been a change in behavior. Invariably if I start up and shut down quickly without doing too much, XBMC shuts down fine. It seem to occur most if I have left XBMC running overnight (or atleast several hours)

Hello Everyone,
I recently gave up on the "other" Media solution <B***E>
and Im glad I did.
XBMC is worlds better.
I do have one issue that seems to fit in this thread.

Its the "hang on shutdown. It only seems to afflict a minority of users"
problem.
It manifests only after I have watched a video for a while.
It doesn't matter if the video is streamed or content from a local file.
When I click shutdown, the screen hangs.
Since the screen is "always on top" I cant shut XBMC down.
The PC seems to be ok and the os is NOT hung.
I have to either hard-boot the machine or kill the XBMC task remotely from another machine, using taskkill.exe.
For those that have another machine available, heres the command string so you can make a shortcut.
%windir%\system32\taskkill.exe /s system-name /im XBMC.exe
Substitute "system-name" with the name of your PC/HTPC <no quotes>.
Thanks in advance, i will follow this thread, and if you have anything you want me to try, just ask.
Again, GREAT APP !!

Thanks
Zim
