UI Font corruption on old hardware
#1
I'm trying to run XBMC on an old Dell D600 laptop with a Radeon 9000 (a 32 MB card) as a potential car video player for the kids. Unfortunately, for some reason all the text in the UI is completely unreadable and scrambled (See screenshot below):

This is on Ubuntu 11.04. I have tried changing the font setting under appearance, and changing the skin. I have also tried re-installing XBMC. All the UI menus look like this, or worse. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've taken a debug log of xbmc to see if that helps; it is here.

The problem is that the mesa 7.10.2 that is the current latest for Ubuntu Natty has a font bug with older Radeon cards. Updating them to the latest unstable version from xorg-edgers fixed this problem. I believe it was fixed in 7.10.3 as well, but I haven't tried. Just updating this in case someone else has this problem too.
