Is there a way to use xbmc.sleep() but let the program still accept input from the user during the sleep?

I've created a popup dialog that I want to appear for a few seconds but whenever it does the program stops accepting input. So basically I'm trying to create my own version of the built in notifcation function using a windowxmldialog
