I decided to try and share all my media from an external drive remotely anywhere on the internet through AirDisk and so far this is proving to be not worth it.

I have my 1TB drive into my Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and I have everything working internally within my WLAN. This is using a SMB share to my AEBS and then to the drive. If I do exactly the same thing but now use my public IP (for remote access) then I always get an "operation time out" error.

A bit of the log is here.

Code:
23:05:02 T:2891952832 M: 94490624  NOTICE: starting zeroconf publishing
23:05:02 T:2957651968 M: 94490624  NOTICE: UDP: Listening on port 9777
23:06:19 T:2891952832 M: 58236928   ERROR: SMBDirectory->GetDirectory: Unable to open directory : 'smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@IP/Time%20Machine%20Backups'
                                            unix_err:'3c' error : 'Operation timed out'
23:06:20 T:2891952832 M: 58204160   ERROR: GetDirectory - Error getting smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@IP/Time Machine Backups
23:07:51 T:2891952832 M: 81072128  NOTICE: Samba is idle. Closing the remaining connections

I've implemented bits out here but has anyone had any success with this before?

Thanks.

First of all, you're not going to be able to stream movies using your public IP, unless you somehow have a 100 megabit upload through your ISP.

Second, for this to even work in theory, you'd have to make sure you forward all the necessary ports from your router.

Unless I'm missing something, I'd say no, it can never be worth it if you're trying to access the media for streaming remotely.

Most ISPs like to block SMB access over the internet due to some past worm/virus (I think)

Ahhh ok I didn't think of that. I possible have the worst Internet in the world so I will give up on that one. Cheers guys.
