Sad
Yep, i've got this too.

Asrock Ion 330 was using full Jaunty desktop , XBMC standalone, 185 drivers and had been running satisfactorily until a couple of weeks ago. Then, for no apparent reason - though, of course something must've changed, maybe the ppa going over to alpha 1 - anything with mp3 audio stopped producing sound. (AVI's with other than mp3 sound continued to work.) Eek

Now in an attempt to sort this out and stay on top of the recent changes i have updated/upgraded. Full Karmic desktop, Camelot Beta 1 and using latest 185 drivers (i've read there are issues with 190 and Ions). Everything else is fairly OK - a few niggles, nothing major fingers crossed. However, still no mp3 sound output. Confused

I'm no expert and will continue to be n00b for some time yet so if anyone can advise it'd be appreciated..

<<Edited with "useful" info>>
Architecture: i686
Hardware: Asrock Ion 330
Karmic full desktop
Debug log: http://pastebin.com/m4374553a
nVidia driver version: 190.42 (according to the X server settings despite me entering "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic nvidia-glx-185" when i was piecing together, <shrug>)
http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
Beta 1 installed from ppa: http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/karmic-ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Problem is: NO sound from mp3 audio source (movie or music).
The debug log records starting xbmc, turning on debug log, navigate to and play audio file (named A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray), navigate to and play avi with mp3 (named Anvil), and finally navigate to and play movie named 9 with DTS (to prove that some sound is working OK).

<<Edit 2 - fixed (for me, hope it helps others too)>>

So i looked through my own log file, found the sections that seemed relevant, noticed the "passthrough" had failed and thought that i knew where to affect this in the xbmc settings...

I changed the:
System/Settings > System > Audio Output > Audio Output Device
To:
Custom
And on the new line beneath that, named Custom Audio Device, added to it:
hdmi

Tested same files as before and everything now all good!!

I think the sound problem started with Alpha 1 (or maybe 2). I am a bit pissed about it because I did NOT want any alpha/beta on my HTPC, which I use day to day entertainment. But someone put alpha 1 in the stable repo and now I cannot even go back. I have a ticket open on this since alpha2 but there is no response yet (http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/7695). The same music files work with mplayer.

I know this thread is almost a year old, but I just wanted to say that I had this issue. It seems that my digital audio output had disappeared from the default device list. Instead I did custom and set it to iec958 and my non digital sound works now.

Got similar problem:
Music files sudenly stopped play, but DVD and video have a perfect sound, all formats.
Also: there is a small icon at the right upper corner of the XBMC home page showing in red that the speakers are OFF - could not find the knob to fix it.

ANYONE HELP??
