Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice, I've got a CIR Head ASRock but I'm not sure the best module to get, the ASRock remote seems no longer available and I can't find an cheap RC6 USB dongles in the UK (I am probably looking up the wrong thing)

I want to power on using my Logitech Harmony Ultimate, so I assume that I need get power supplied to USB ports even when the machine is off.
Do one of my front USB ports need to have the cable cross over the CIR Header to turn it into a IR port for a RC6 Dongle, then when powered I can use a profile on my harmony to power up and use the machine?

Or should I get something like the Streacom/Wesena IR module, I was thinking I could mount it behind my case on one of the PCI slots and use my Harmonys Hub's IR Blasters to control it from behind.
If I went this method has anyone got any confirmation that the Streacom devices aren't unique IR and any signal can get it to power one. as per this review -http://www.quietpc.com/st-irpb?gclid=CIHM1JrYtr8CFYzKtAodsysA7Q

but cheapest and an easy way to power on from cold boot no mater what os bios or setup u have you can use any of these

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Ship...08014.html

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Miii-M1-P...72135.html
u can use right out the box like it is or can be taken apart and can be installed internally, i do this for my mini budget htpcs where they want power on off feat.
or can be used with any remote that has ir learning or just ir for the power button
like if you wanted a remote with keyboard like these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-USB-2-4GHz-...4852c41d2c
http://www.ebay.com/itm/iPazzPort-2-4G-M...540570ab26

http://www.ebay.com/itm/161096772974?ssP...1423.l2649

get the cheapest one around 12$ and pair it with better remote around 20-25
and you have remote with media functions and keyboard that powers on from cold boot for around 30-40$ depending how u do it or cheaper
and also on everyone i did only the power button powers it on aswell not any button but cant say it will like this for everyone or on every system but it does for me
now if we could just get a good all rf remote with keyboard and media key that works and has ir power button for reasonable price
would be golden .... tired of these dumb air mouses

That's a great post! Thanks!

I didn't get along with the radio version I bought. I just couldn't get my system to boot from USB and I think it just comes down to the motherboard not supporting a IR in this way. Eventually the remote stopped working entirely, so wasn't impressed with the quality. Using a different IR remote at present, with the same lack of power on support. Where keyboard appears in the BIOS USB list, the remote/IR sensor does not. From what I have read online, it seems that IR remotes do not qualify for constant power supply from the motherboard, unlike a keyboard.

I ordered myself the M9. Not a bad price for the kit included. It looks like the wiring parts are a means to gain power directly from the motherboard connection. Seems a very pragmatic way to gain USB control. I'll give an update after 30days (delivery from China).

I'm UK. I bought this one last year for a asrock build.

Dear friends,

I have this little and cheap ($5) device: http://www.htpcbeginner.com/simple-cheap...e-control/
and it works like a charm, except it does not wake up my acer netbook from sleep. It acts as a HID device.
A wireless mouse doeswake up, but this device does not.
I made sure in devices manager that all hid devices are allowed to wake up the computer, but still... this remote does not.
Any suggestion?
I've checked it also on another laptop with no luck.

The Inteset PC-IRS5-01 IR receiver answers this question perfectly. It can turn on virtually ANY PC from the complete off state using a common universal remote. Then control it with no special BIOS settings, software, or drivers. You can find it on Kickstarter:

How can i know if i have a CIR header?

I just installed a Streacom IRRC board into my HTPC. I used the keymapping software to set the record button to shutoff/turn on the device. The computer will shutdown (S5 state), but it will not turn on. I verified that the IRRC is receiving power from the USB header when the computer is off. I have emailed Streacom technical support, but was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions.

I have an asrock motherboard with the CIR header on it. I really want to get a CIR receiver for it but have come to the conclusion that they are just not available in the US. I've seen people say there are guides for making one yourself online, but I can't find one. Anyone know a good resource? I did find this: http://blog.tynemouthsoftware.co.uk/2012...ified.html but it makes me paranoid because its simple with no resistors or capacitors needed. Thoughts? I know there's the interset solution, but I'd rather spend less money than that and also take advantage of the CIR header instead of splicing into my PSU's wires.

Hi,

I have 2x HTPC's with CIR motherboards (ASRock) in my house. I have done headers myself, like here: http://blog.tynemouthsoftware.co.uk/2012...ified.html
No need to mess with PSU - IR is connected via 3 wires to CIR pins on motherboard, without any resistors or capacitors. You just need to plug it, that's it.
My HTPC's are powering ON (cold boot) with that solution without any additional hardware.

Hi all,

New user here. Just a quick question on this. Do you all think it would be possible for me to get a ps/2 to USB adapter and connect FLIRC to it and map the enter button of a keyboard to the power button?

Do you think this would work?

Thanks in advance!

Why do you want to alter the button? You can adjust the mapping inside KODI (but only for a running KODI instance)
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_keymaps

If you want to power on KODI with FLIRC, thats a very different beast and only wake up from standby/suspend should be possible. I have no experience with FLIRC, but all my IR receivers need some sort of connection to the PSU to power on the HTPC. WakeOnLAN and a tablet/phone with KORE or Yatze are good alternatives if you have suitable hardware

Hey Zehner

Sorry i meant to say alter the power button on my WD remote to be an ENTER button. So in my mind... PS/2 to USB adapter is plugged in and my FLIRC is plugged into this adapter. If i press the Power button on my remote it should turn on HTPC.

Somehow i dont think its possible but thought i would ask!

I shall look into Wake on Lan as an alternative.

Thanks
