I like to sleep with noise in the background. Unfortunately the bright lights from the tv prevent me from falling asleep sometimes. How can I keep the audio running but make the screen black.

I have tried googling a way to set the screen brightness, however no matter how I try to do this with every method I find I get a "Cannot open display" error.

Other methods such as setting a certain files contents in a sub-directory of the /sys/ or /proc/ directories don't work because the necessary files to control brightness do not exist there on the live installation.

Can someone please give me some advice on this? This is driving me mad. Thanks.

Many TV's have the option to turn off the screen, while still being 'ON'. It's an energy saving thing. You could try that approach instead of manipulating your OS.

Does the screensaver run while video is playing? If so is there a way I can trigger it with my remote? Also otcho, I have a pretty cheap TV. So I don't think that is a feature that I can use.
