Apple's ALAC codec now open source

Pretty big news hitting the tech blogs, so I thought I'd echo it here. Looks like Apple has released the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) under the Apache License. Seems to be a pretty big deal as all Apple I-devices support ALAC. Here is the source article:

Nice! This can only be a good thing for the open-source media scene. Now if they would just open up iPod/iPhone syncing... [/dream]

They probably won't open up the syncing part of it, but there are plenty of programs available that let you add stuff to your iPod/iPhone library. Unfortunately those songs get lost the next time you sync.

You're welcome, I have always been looking for an excuse to try converting some FLAC files to ALAC for play on my iphone, now I may finally have one Big Grin
