Question
I've been thinking of getting a TV tuner but I don't want a set top box, and I don't want to have to put a TV tuner into the HTPC then muck about getting a tv-tuner-backend going as well as XBMC.

AverMedia have LAN-attached tv tuners. http://www.avermedia.com/avertv/Product/...spx?Id=543 and even less useful information at http://www.avermedia.com/avertv/Upload/H...series/EN/ !

They are all about getting it running on your IPad. I don't freaking care about IPads or their users, but I was thinking that if this thing can convert the DVB-T into something I can watch over my LAN, great!

There's some software for Windows too. But as all bundled software goes it appears (from the very limited info I've found on it) to be a compete waste of time with a 1990's interface aimed at idiots. Check out the screenshots in the software manual - http://www.avermedia.com/avertv/Upload/D...090811.pdf - aargh, my eyes are bleeding! (Also, more horror here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc3krMlB_cM - nasty - did they get Creative to write their software or something *shudder*).

Anyway, the manual also mentions a "Universal DVP plugin" for MCE but that's all - mentions. Dicks.

So anyway, what I'm looking for is:
  • Some kind of confirmation that XBMC can stream a h.264 or mpeg2 stream off a lan device at 720 or 1080p to begin with
  • Some kind of plug in that lets me change channels - my remote has channel buttons but they aren't mapped in XBMC since there's no PVR component (yet). I want these keys to shim to the AverMedia box instead.
  • Someone to come along and say "Oh, I've got that working, it's great, here's the plugin you need - link"!

I wouldn't be above network sniffing to find out what is going on controlling their software and writing something better - but I thought I'd ask if that's already been done - and since I don't already own this box because I'm not sure that it will work with XBMC anyway.
