PSU Choice Help
#1
Hi guys, I've been using XBMC for quite a while, and i've often lurked around these forums, as they are immensely helpful. I'm going to build myself a custom rig for XBMC, but I'm stuck on choice of PSU, as I've never built a custom PC before, any help would be most welcome:

[SSD]: http://www.ebuyer.com/268239-ocz-60gb-ag...25sat3-60g

I already have RAM and Storage drives at home from previous PCs that I'm going to use. Now Amazon Uk recommends this PSU:

But it seems very powerful for the PC, it needs to be powerful enough to run all 6 SATA ports.

Thanks, if I wanted to add a reasonably powerful GPU to play modern games, but 3D capabilities are not needed, can you recommend any?

Thats a little more tricky. IMO The starting point for gaming would be AMD HD 5750/6770. The 450 PSU would be fine. This would allow you to run games at a decent frame rate but nothing too impressive. The 6870 is a great GPU however you would have to up the PSU to 550 /600 and there would be noise as an added side affect. Something most HTPC users don't like. Nvidia cards would be the 450 /550 460 / 560 Anyting less IMO would be sub gaming like the 5450 520 are not gaming cards.

For a very low power consumption AMD A6-3500 APU, you really don't need any PSU more than 300W PSU. This "Seasonic Power Supply SS-300ET" is more than enough for it.

If you want to be able to turn off/on your HTPC with MCE IR/Remote from cold start, I'm suggesting this "Asrock A75M A75 Socket FM1 7.1 Channel HD Audio mATX" instead.

If you want to enjoy the latest game, AMD HD6870 might be your best choice "
XFX Radeon HD 6870 Graphics card 1GB GDDR5 SDRAM".

I am using a Sapphire HD 6850 you can play pretty much everything at max (new games without AA and stuff).
A good 450W PSU should be enough and the Sapphire cooler is really quit

Here is the comparision- Radeon HD 6850 vs Radeon HD 6870. Since HD6870 has the slight edge with the performance and it is about the same price, would as well get the HD6870. Since your HD6850 max TDP is 127W, you really don't need 450W PSU! Smile

Yea I just bought the 6850 on release because of the silent cooler but I think now there are 6870 with non standard cooler too.
