So the back of the aTV2 has the micro slim usb port. But my external has the fatter micro usb port. They dont make a cable that would work for both to hook up correctly so can I buy a usb hub or standard usb female/female adapter so my aTV can read from the HD directly?

errr it can't read from an external HDD at all :S

The Apple TV 2 can not operate as a USB host, so hooking an external drive or any other USB device to it will not work. To access media it must be located on the local network, ATV2's limited internal memory, and/or streaming from the internet.
