First HTPC build
#1
Hi,

I'm planning on building my first HTPC. At first i wanted to use the LC19 as case, but this had too many limitations.

I came up with this:
[CPU] AMD A8-3850
[MOBO] Asus F1A75-M
[COOLER] Scythe Shuriken Rev. B
[CASE] In Win BM639
[MEM] G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ
[HDD} Western Digital Caviar Green WD5000AADS, 500GB

Will this build be able to:
* play 3D
* play blu ray rips, MKV, ...
* handle heavy XBMC skins
* download using sabnzbd while doing any of the tasks above ...

Thx for your help !

Yes it will. Are you going to use 7?

In the beginning I'll be using Win7.
Later on (when decent linux support for the HW is available) I'll switch to linux.

I can't find if this mobo has hdmi 1.4 though ...

Anything newer than Dec or 2009 has HDMI 1.4

Lol Laugh

Can it download with sabnzbd and play 1080p at the same time ?

Maybe I should go for the A8-3800 (as I want to make a quiet htpc) ?
It has a TDP of 65w versus 100 of the 3850.

I think you could even go for a A6-3500.
Enough for the stuff you want to do only heavy gaming could be a problem.

I am not going to play games on it.
It will be only used to watch HD, 3D and download with sabnzbd, couchpotato and the like.

But I will be using heavy skins though

A bit future proof won't hurt :-)

The PSU is rated at 160W, will this suffice (as the 3850 has a TDP of 100 W)

Should I get 8 or 4 GB of RAM in order to download with sabnzbd in the background ?

For Windows 7 64-bit HTPC, 4GB of RAM is all you need. You'll not benefit from 8GB.

A8-3800 is great but it's not available to order right now. The A8-3850 is easier to find. I listed it in my signature too- Excellent HTPC's. I preferred AsRock A75M motherboard because it included option to turn on/off HTPC from cold start with MCE remote.
>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

At the moment, this case is only available with a 120W PSU...
Will this suffice, or is this on the edge ?

According to bit tech the CPU uses around 92W when fully stressed... I don't know how much to count for the mobo, RAM, fans, HDD and later on maybe a slot drive ...
