OP here :-)

Funny this should be bumped now as I'm having my first real problem with the system since I built it. After apt-get update/upgrade yesterday afternoon, the fglrx ati driver was updated, and XBMC will no longer load. The splashscreen will load for a second, then cut out, then repeat for a total of three times, before dumping me at the X desktop login page.

Only errors I see in xbmc.log are

00:22:44 T:3044182864 ERROR: Unable to load libcrystalhd.so.3, reason: libcrystalhd.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

00:22:44 T:3044182864 ERROR: GLX: Same window as before, refreshing context

Xorg.log doesn't show anything that looks amiss. Neither does syslog.

Other than this incident, it's been great since I built it just after Xmas. Plays anything I throw at it, and streams like a champ.

AMD A8-3870
Asrock A75 Pro4-M
Scythe slim fan
32GB Torx2 SSD
2x2gb HyperX 1600
Intel pci gigabit nic - had some issues with onboard gigabit and 9k jumbo frames, but they may have been due to another machine on the same switch
Unraid server w/ ~8TB

As suggested I bought an Nvidia Fermi card (asus GT520) in case there were hardware accel problems with the APU in xbmc, but didn't end up needing to use it.
