I recently bought this remote on eBay:



But it didn't come with the original HP USB receiver:



So I'm wondering... It only works with it's respective IR receiver or any IR receiver will do the job?

That remote should be a fairly standard media center remote, so it should work with any receiver that's meant to receive media center commands.

Any eHome/RC6 receiver will work, but other receivers will not. Your safest, and probably cheapest, option is to look for an HP receiver like the one you show. If you spot a receiver you're welcome to post a link here and I'll have a look to see if it'slikely to work.
