When scraping (currently movies) the computer has always completely frozen only fixed by a hard reset. any ideas why?

Specs:

win7 ultimate
core i5 (overclocked if that matters)
asrock p55 extreme
4gb ram
6950 (unlocked if that matters).

never had anything like this before. no BSOD or any error message. just everything freezes and harddrives stop spinning.

My guess is that your computer itself is not locked up but you're in Full Screen mode in XBMC and it's not letting you get back to your desktop. Try running XBMC in windowed mode by hitting "/" or in settings choose Full Screen window instead of True full screen. It's not going to solve the lockup problem but should allow you to get into task manager to kill xbmc. While in setup turn on debug logging and post it to a site like pastebin.com which will help diagnose the problem.

Assuming what Dobyken suggested does nothing, your problem could be one from so many. More than likely related to hardware. Just because you've never had anything like this before, doesn't mean it's not hardware causing the problem now. Try setting your CPU back to factory settings aswell as your gfx card. That's a start anyway, next is a process of elimination, run memory tests, hard drive tests etc. All these things are easy to do and don't take a great deal of time and effort so best to test those first.

If you are confident it's not hardware then have you tried a fresh install of XBMC ? No addons or anything just plain XBMC. Add some movies then scrape and see what happens. How about Eden beta or Dharma? Have you got a spare hard drive you could try a fresh install of windows on or even XBMC Live ?

Finding the cause of a system freeze can either be very simple or extremely tricky.

Are you maybe using Eden Beta 1 ?
