I changed

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

to

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=1

saved then ran

sudo update-grub

which seems to hold so i did it correctly but still nothing.

I think you need to change

GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

to

GRUB_TIMEOUT=1

Works for me.
