I have used the windows installer to install xbmc, but was wondering which installation type is the best performing or recommended by others here.

You will get different results here I think, different people will use/prefer different distros. Personally I use Raspbmc and for a build thats not had a "1.0" release yet it's great!

There is also OpenELEC, Xbian and Raspbian (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Raspberry_Pi) so it's more what you want and what they all offer really.
Set Up
Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc - XBMC 12.2
40" Samsung ES6800 LED Smart 3D 1080P TV
Onkyo HTS3405 5.1 DD True HD and DTS-HD Surround Sound
ReadyNAS Duo with 4TB (2 x 2TB X-RAID) Western Digital Caviar Green using NFS

Can open, worms everywhere !!!! Smile

Personally I am on Raspbmc, although I did feel that RC4 was more stable that RC5, latest RC5 appears to be getting much better though. I flirted with OpenELEC but for some bizarre reason I lost all audio and couldn't fix it.

I would start with Raspbmc, especially as the install is so easy. If you get anything that's a deal breaker, try openele.c
