So to bitstream HD audio, do I need new motherboard or just videocard?
#1
Hey guys new user, first post. Ive just recently tried to get into this media server thing. I tried plex and like it, and I know it all comes from XBMC originally, and since you have bitstream HD audio support, Id Like to try this route. I am new at this so bear with me. I know I might not hear a difference between audio tracks, but just knowing its there, and Im not using it, bugs me....

So I have a Windows PC that I built when win 7 came out, and I rip my Blu rays using MakeMKV. I do not have a separate video card on my PC just the one built into the motherboard which is a Gigabyte 785 ud2h with AMD Athlon II X4 630 Processor. I dont believe this has the capability to bitstream the HD audio formats, and just curious what I might need. A new motherboard?, or just an add on videocard.

Any help is appreciated...

Thanks,
Josh

Quick question.

At our home we play all of our content (mostly HD MKV) from my partner's computer on MPC-HC. My partner uses this Windows 7 PC for work during the day and in the evening it effectively turns into a HTPC. I just purchased a new audio system that decodes HD audio so I would like to get the necessary hardware to bitstream HD audio from MKV to the receiver. I believe this is now possible; figuring it all out is a challenge, however.

This PC currently has a GTX 275, but it will not bitstream HD audio. My partner is happy with its graphical capabilities, however, and does not want to change cards. I'm wondering if it's possible to continue using the GTX 275 for pretty much everything except bitstreaming HD Audio, which I would do with the GT 520.

We are looking to do this on a budget so if it was as simple as adding a GT 520 that can be purchased for around 50$ that would be great.

There's even cheaper cards to get it done as well.

On the AMD side you need 5450 or greater. An HD6450 can be found for $30 (on sale often).

So it's possible to use both cards? This isn't something I've done before but I'm confident I can figure it out if you guys can confirm that it should work at the outset.

Are you also able to confirm that you can bitstream truehd/dtshd audio embedded in MKV over HDMI to my audio receiver for decoding?

Thanks.

You simply install this "SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6450" in your PC and connect it this way "HD6450-->AVR-->HDTV via 2 HDMI cables....you should be able to bitstream HD audio.....you can check my signature for more info....
