I've done much googling on this one for a while now.

I watch many photo slideshows within XBMC and love the smooth fades between pictures, but hate the stop start clumsiness between cam shot videos.

Is there a way, via script/add on of placing smooth transitions between video files?

XBMC starts a video, there is no fade in.. options.

Many movies have a fade in & out from black edited in. I suggest you might consider a video editor that would allow fade in & out to black, and save them that way. Alternative would be running a small in & out video with your main videos between, the add-on script Cinema Experience will do that for you.
