Questions on unRaid build
#1
I have been reading over the forums the past few days and I'm about to start building my unRaid server and htpc. I plan on taking a look at assassins guides. My question right now is if any of these parts from a computer I built in 2004 will work. Or if I should just buy all new for better energy, noise and faster parts. The computer from what I remember was pretty noisy so not sure if I can use the case from before. But here is the shopping list for the computer:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3400+ ClawHammer 2.2GHz Socket 754 Processor ADA3400BOX

Not sure if this mono has the requirements to run multiple hard drives, appears the case has about 7 3.5" bays. But thank you who ever takes a minute to look and help me out. Hope to start buying parts this week.

I would make sure all your old 2004 parts or your planned new parts are compatible with unRAID. I would start HERE,if you havent already that is..Good luck..... unRAID is awesome!

If your old PC is just lying around I'd suggest that you simply try running the free version of unraid on it - all it takes is an empty thumb drive. The alternative is to spend time searching/reading on the forums to see what others have reported. I did the former when I build my first unraid server.
HTPC: Win 7 Home 64-bit | MB | CPU | GPU | RAM | Case | PSU | Tuner | HDDs: OS, Media | DVD Burner | Remote
Media server: unraid 4.7 | CPU | MB | RAM | Case | PSU | HDDs: Parity-2TB, Data-2x2TB

That should work fine with UnRAID although as previously suggested - try the free version before buying the full one.
Your board has 6 SATA ports so you should be able to hook up plenty of drives and you also have Gbit ethernet.

It won't be the most energy efficient, but you may be able to justify that against the cost of buying dedicated hardware.

I found UnRAID worked well but needs a bit of tinkering to get it running nice and the slackware base makes compiling add-ons a little complex.

I switched to OpenMediaVault. It's free, blows the socks off UnRAID performance wise and is debian based, so if you want to add things like pyLoad or tvheadend it is simpler.

Think just going to keep case and scratch everything else. Any recommendation on new case fans? Need a front, back and door fan. I'm looking to do a micro board. Mainly being used to serve data to one htpc for now and laptop, ipad, and few other things. Would like room to grow so dont want to skimp. Any good recommendations on CPU and board?

This powerful enough for server? Or would it be better for something a lil more? Not sure good board option for this either.

This power supply is supposed to go cheap at 3pm today. Will this be enough to power a unRaid server? Also would it work for a htpc. Will prob get the i3 3225 CPU and 8gb of ram. Not sure on board yet. Will prob also have a ssd drive.

Thanks
