Linux Noob-Question: AMD, LINUX, Optical Out and HD Bitstreaming

Question
RESOLVED (i think): http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=161987

hi all

i looked around in the forum and didn't found a straight answer to my question:

i would like to build my own htpc and would like to put an AMD-A10-5700 in it. i want to run linux with it and have audio bitstreaming over an optical spdif.
is this even possible? i know about the bad linux drivers for amd and read about the bitstreaming problem in linux. but i haven't figured out if it would even be possible with an AMD- A10 and an A75 chipset mainboard.

i looked at a zotac zbox id42 box as alternative, but with all the people with crashes popping up in the forums i rather build my own, more powerfull, box.

thanks for your feedback.

Dolby Digital and DTS can be bitstreamed over optical SPDIF but for bitstreaming HD audio formats (Dolby True-HD and DTS-MA) those can only be done over HDMI.

Also, AMD linux drivers only do stereo bitstreaming. This is the reason I put a cheap Nvidia card in my e-350 setup. Would have liked to keep it pretty much silent but use Openelec (which is Linux) and it simply doesn't work with HD Bitstreaming through the onboard gubbins.
