Getting an MCE's IR to see other remotes
#1
Here's my goal:

The TV that I've got mounted in my office is connected to a Windows laptop running XBMC. The remote that comes with the TV is universal in that it can be coded with any number of other devices to control. I'd like to get windows to recognize IR signals sent from the TV's remote (that aren't for the TV itself) to control XBMC.

I purchased one of the unbranded remotes (http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...MCE_remote) that has an IR receiver, but I can't get WinLIRC to recognize any signals coming from it. Part of the problem is knowing which of the drivers to use before creating a config file, but I've tried dozens of combinations with no luck. It's a USB receiver and I have no serial ports on the laptop.

Has anyone gotten this little cheapy off brand to work with WinLIRC for remotes other than the one it came with? Or with this being a keyboard emulator, am I doomed to using 2 remotes?

Have a look at using eventghost instead of winlirc. It recognises keys that I programmed into my harmony remote from a old TV remote via a MCE receiver and eg can be used to control xbmc.

i'll give it a shot, but I think the problem resides more in the detection of the IR receiver than the correct remote codes.

installed EventGhost and, through a bit of workarounds, I got it to recognize events from the PC Remote that came with the receiver, but nothing else. When I point my TV remote at it and start pressing buttons, nothing is reported in the log, which is what I feared.

Its been a while since I set mine up but I vaguely remember having to install a service via EG as admin for the MCE receiver before it would accept non MCE remote codes. Did you do something along those lines?

Also what kind of TV/remote you trying to use? And does the receiver have a light that's lights up when it receives a signal? If so does it light up when using the TV remote?

I thought about making a winlirc plugin for that receiver. But it requires that a custom driver be installed. Eventghost has one. It's not a full driver as such, but more of an inf file which tells windows how to use the hardware. But anyhow I didn't bother with it. Since it would have been a lot of work, for a real crappy remote. And it won't work with other remotes, only the bundled one, which is horribly quiet frankly.

If you are technically included, you would be better off making one of these (for a few dollars). You can see mine below. Used that for quite some time.

or buying some other USB receiver. Personally I use a genuine MS MCE receiver with my own remotes. For winlirc, on win7 64 you have to run winlirc in administrator mode to get it to work with MCE hardware. Just driver limitations. Hope this helps.
