Raspberry Pi - Optical SPDIF Solution?
#1
I'd like to try a Raspberry Pi with OpenElec, what makes it expensive however is that I need optical audio as my Bose 3.2.1 doesnt support HDMI.

What options do I have? I've found a HDMI>HDMI/SPDIF splitter on Amazon but its £50! Are there any other options confirmed as working for 5.1 DTS/Dolby pass through?

I've also seen USB>SPDIF devices, but would XBMC put video through HDMI and passthrough audio through USB?

Certainly as a general proposition XBMC can put video over HDMI and audio over an external spdif sound card BUT on the Pi i think something other than alsa is used for sound, so it may not be possible in the particular case of the Pi.

So a HDMI/SPDIF splitter is my only option, or skip the Pi completely

This one is $35, still a high cost considering the cost of the Pi.

I have looked for a USB solution, but it seems that driver support is limited for most pi OS's, you can go to http://www.raspyfi.com and get some insight into the situation, they have a music player build that includes USB DAC drivers. USB DACs can be found for a decent price, I think also usb SPDIF adaptors are also included.

USB is not an option for xbcm on the Pi currently.
There is an experimental raspbmc build that supports music, but isn't usable for video.
