2.5" NAS Hard drives

Anyone recommend a decent 2.5" hard drive for a NAS?

Just bought an ICY dock unit for my HP ProLiant N54L so I can expand but unsure what drives are the best. 3.5" I've got WD red but can't see any equivlant for 2.5".

The NAS is an always on - couchpotato, sickbeard, DSAudio and XBMC MYSQL DB - beast so something reliant is essential. They don't have to be 7200rpm as they'll be in RAID 5 config. 2TB is more than sufficient but if anyones had any luck with 3TB I could be pursuaded to give them a try.

Thank you please

You have the 6x2,5" in one 5,25" IcyDock?

There are only 2Tb maximum size 2,5" drives on the market.

2000GB WD Green

They won't fit in the IcyDock.
You'll fit only 1TB Drives in the IcyDock.

And they are really pricey compared to 3,5" Drives.

What about an external 3,5" enclosure and USB 3.0 or eSATA?

I haven't got it yet, oredered today but now you've made me nervous!

Can't see anything on http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=151that suggests it only accepts 1TB drives although a review at http://www.wegotserved.com/2012/08/19/ha...ne-module/ (dated August last year) suggests you're right.

I'll report back my findings when it's delivered next week. Scared now. Sad

If this doesn't work It'll probably be just as easy to get another server rather than fill it with USB drives.

There are different form factors for 2.5" HDDs. The 1TB and under are the unofficial standard 9.5mm thick. Above 1TB they can be 12.5mm - 15mm thick so they may not fit a standard enclosure.

Samsung 840 PRO is only 6.8mm thick.

But that's an SSD and not with the capacity the OP wants.
