According to FernetMenta, "Visualization is not implemented for PulseAudio". Having a PulseAudio XBMC setup, I'd like to make a feature request to have that changed: Please add support for visualization when using PulseAudio.

We intend to add a PulseAudio sink to be used by an audio engine already supporting viz. It's on the to-do list.

While I appreciate the response from a developer, a bit more detail would be respectable to the original poster. This issue basically effects every ubuntu based distro running XBMC/kodi.
