Bay Trail-D motherboards
#16
I would wait for the J1850 or J1900 since they're quad cores and shouldn't cost much more. Still passive cooling I think.

Gigabyte J1900 already available. Lots and lots of connectivity (4xUSB3.0, DVI, VGA2560x1600, 2xUTP, S/PDIF even 2xSerial and 2xPS2).

So what is missing? straight hmdi...If only...

How do these CPU compare to the Celeron 1037?

The CPU is slightly faster but the real advantage is they are 10W TDP which means they are fanless unlike the 17W 1037U which has a fan.

Thanks for the info! Glad I waited to buy.

Note that for e.g. mobile streaming, the J1800 might be better than the J1850 as it supports hardware accelerations (Intel Quick Synch).

So what would be the best for a home entertainment center? In my case I envision a central unit running 24/7 with 2-4 digital tuners and streaming to hdmi, as well as to various pc's and tablets aound the house.

For a tablet or laptop the difference between 7.5W and 10W is the difference between 7 or 10 hrs of battery life. For a wired application the annual electricity charges seem to vary hardly (a good PSU might be more important), so as long as it can be passive cooled, it seems Ok.

Does this mean that all this turbo stuff is less important? And that higher graphic speeds and an MB with dual channel/dual rams might be more important? How important is the quad core, in benchmarks they seem to hardly exceed their dual core peers? Which MB or processor would do 2HD over hmdi?

Any thoughts or links on this matter?

Trust the J1900 is the processor which combines 4Core with 2 or more GHz, and also has some of the extra functionality like quick synch. The next step up would be a n2930, which would also support wireless HD display, but no boards seem to be available, and they will be even more expensive then the ones below.

As I intent to use the HTPC also a a Multi DVI tuner, streaming to various units around the hous, I welcome a bit more processing power and multiple USB and SATA ports. I still have 2x 2Gb DDR3 SODIMM laying around (not DDR3L), so it would be great if I can use these.

For the J1900, I found the following boards:

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDet...-us0000623
Foxconn, can do straight DDR3, but only single channel/1xSODIMM so using old memory sticks, would be only 2Gb with shared video

http://www.supermicro.com/products/mothe...X10SBA.cfm
http://www.supermicro.com/products/mothe...0SBA-L.cfm
Don't know what the difference is between these two boards. Only DDR3L

http://www.steatite-embedded.co.uk/fanle...cpu-1.html
Asrock is Pricy with UKP180 (UKP150 elsewhere)

http://www.advantech.com/products/1-2JKK...78e27.aspx
Noted reliminary, and no old SODIMM DDR3

http://www.msi.com/product/ipc/MS98E3.html
As opposed to the J1800I board, the J1900 board is only DDR3L, not DDR3 memory

Boards without HDMI:

http://www.dfi.com.tw/products/ProductDe...uctId=1583
http://cloudreviewhq.com/the-cloud/gigab...therboard/

So for now the MSI J1800I, for just EUR75, allowing the use of 2x2Gb old SODIMM DDR3 memory seems the best option for me...

Sweet! Can that miniPCIe slot take an SSD or is it for WiFi/Bluetooth only??

I have tested the Gigabyte J1800N-D2H and it has several problems.

1) HDMI does not work correctly - the display won't sync correctly - not even during POST or in BIOS setup.
2) Booting anyhting except Windows 8/8.1 in UEFI mode is impossible.
If you enable legacy boot (CSM settings) in the bios it will boot Linux, Openelec, Win7 for a few seconds and then restart to the bios. I read in another forum that the Bay Trail-D only supports Win8/8.1

I recommend everyone to stay away from this motherboard today (bios version F2 - maybe it will improve with a newer bios?).

I have also tried to get support from Gigabyte on these issues, but they only responds with that Win8/8.1 is the only supported operating system.

I have also tried to boot OpenElec 4.0 beta (EFI image) and it will only start to the bootloader, once Live or Install is selected from the boot menu it will either hang or reboot.

I have also reported the HDMI problem (and I have seen others with the same problem in other forums). I have not received any feedback from Gigabyte on that issue yet.

I will definitely be sticking to C1037U for now. I wish the passive version of the Gigabyte C1037U board was available in the US.

Guys,

I'm troubled by the repor ts of difficulties with those bay trail boards under linux.
I m looking for a replacement for my old Atom + ION motherboard (Atom 330 + nVidia 9400m, with VDPAU) and those bay trails seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. The Gigabyte thing looks like a fiasco to me. As difficult to work with as the laptops.

Question:
Are there, like there was for Ivy Bridge, mini-itx boards with low power soldered "U" or "Y" Haswell CPUs ? I would love a 15W haswell part if Bay Trail doesn't work as expected.

I'm asking this question because I haven't been able to find that sort of things yet (for consumers. There as some pro boards), although the "NUC" and other Brix prove that it would be very interesting and there is a market for it..
