No problem on the Acer Chromebook C720 - which has near-identical specs (same Celeron 2955U CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB M.2 SSD etc. - though the Chromebox has more USB 3.0 ports and built-in GigE and an additional Displayport output as well as HDMI, and the RAM is expandable).

OpenElec is running fine on my C720. Google are pretty good at NOT locking out alternative OS installs. (They've even added Legacy BIOS booting to recent models - and I suspect someone will work out how to alter the BIOS settings in Flash to avoid the CTRL+L requirement as they have for the C720)

I'd be surprised if OpenElec wasn't running on the new Asus Chromebox once it is in the wild...

There's also the option of the Gigabyte Brix using the Intel Celeron 2955U, which comes in both msata and 2.5" drive versions, as a slightly more powerful alternative to the DN2820FYKH NUC it's a better bet than the Chromebox in my view.
