There is no doubt a setting in mcebuddy to just produce the EDL file but I don't know how to do so.

yeah the files are accessed over local/UNC path (That's why you have to setup the windows share for remote clients). Sounds like the default XBMC DVD Player is automatically looking for a corresponding EDL file for the WTV recording file and using that to do the skipping. Brilliant!
