Intel NUC - Bay Trail (Celeron Generation CPU) - DN2820FYKH
I have never tried booting from a USB before. Will this have any effect on my laptop running windows? Presume I can just cancel at the installer screen?

What might the reason be that the USB is not bootable (having completed the correct process for making it bootable)?

Thanks

it appears to provide an interface for selecting a drive to install openelec on, so presumably you can just cancel out at that point rather than proceed. And no idea what could be wrong, it seems to be a pretty straight forward process without much room for anything going wrong - I merely made the observation that from a pure troubleshooting perspective, you haven't proven that the USB works (by doing it in another PC)

I did some quick searching and found a full list of suggested BIOS changes in order to get openElec working on the NUC. You mentioned doing some of these (relating to boot options) but you didnt mention setting the other items such as enabling USB legacy under Perihperals->USB and setting the IGD minimum memory etc. So if you havent made all of the BIOS changes mentioned, perhaps you can try that?

Check under the openelec section here: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboard...033935.htm

Thanks mate, but I have made all the BIOS changes that are mentioned/required (the link you provided is the one I followed).

Unfortunately this is still not working for me.

What are my options in order to actually be able to use my NUC, rather than send it back to Amazon?

Hello,

The top of screen says "EFI Shell version 2.31 - Current running mode 1.1.2" followed below by "Device mapping table" "mapping"

Finally, the last line says "Press ESC in 1 seconds to skip startup.nsh, or any other key to continue". Nothing happens when I try pressing ESC or any other key though, and I can give commands by typing where "Shell>" is (it's below the "last" line). For example, if I type exit and press enter, I will enter BIOS.

I opened the case and remove HDD and tried it but still no success. I removed and plugged RAM and I plugged out every cable and wait more than 30 minutes but I can't pass this error.

In this case what would you suggest to me?

Ok. I have carried on looking for solutions and just stumbled upon >this<

The bit that stood out was about downloading Rufus and "reformat the drive using the MBR Partition for UEFI Computers" before running the Windows batch file.

Will this be the step thats missing to get my USB stick to boot?

I can't try this for several hours as i'm at work (midday UK time) so I just wondered if anyone recommends doing this - and also should I try the 4.0.7 version of OE (and BIOS 34) rather than latest as people were successful installing those versions with this process?

If you can install 4.07, go for it. Upgrade to 4.2.1 is then trivial and involves no external drives.

The Rufus thing is worth trying I suppose, can't hurt.

Finally booting!!!!!!

It is always the simplest of things isn't it. Have been pulling my hair out all week trying to work out why I couldn't get this to boot when I was following all instructions to the letter.

And then I sussed it. The bootable USB wasn't being written properly because the Windows OpenElec installer wasn't running with admin rights!! That's all it was!

Now got it working with 4.2.1 and latest BIOS. So glad that I have worked it out as I was about to send this thing back.

Thanks to those who responded and offered advice Smile

Does anyone have issues with this device running through an av receiver?

It's fine if I run the hdmi direct to tv but if I run it to my onkyo sr308 receiver the tv displays 'mode not supported' with no picture/no audio?

Get ssh working with the normal TV. Then plug in the Onkyo, ssh in and provide:

DISPLAY=:0 /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr | pastebinit

Most likely the Onkyo announces f*cked up resolution.

Thanks for that!! It worked and now working through the receiver.

However, it doesn't want to display in the correct aspect ratio. I can set 'just scan' on my Samsung tv remote to correct it temporarily but then when I change source on the receiver and go back to the NUC again it reverts back. Don't want to have to do this every time. What gives?

Your AVR tells, that it can only do 1080 interlaced formats - so it is a HD Ready TV?

Concerning the ratio - I don' want to force you to the 1080i mode ...

you can temporarily try yourself:

DISPLAY=:0 /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 0xaa

Does this look better? (You won't be able to use it, cause it's only 30 hz)

To revert back to what you currently have:
DISPLAY=:0 /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 0x46
