Would a zotac Xbox id41 running openelec xbmc be more than capable to run xbmc on without too much trouble.I will want to stream 1080p and stream 3d sbs and ou will this machine be ok or would the Intel nuc dn2820fykh be better

It does, that nVidia second generation ION is capable of playing a BR rip with high bitrate even tough it has "only" a Atom 525 as CPU. But if it isn't a bargain one could consider another (modern) chipset.

Or is the Intel nuc dc3217by the better choice can get one for £130 can get the zotac id41 with 2gb ram and 160gb hard drive for £100

The DC3217BY should be filled with ram and storage? This version doesn't has a Lan and one should use a USB to Lan adapter or a Thunderbolt Lan interface. It is a fine device but also more expensive.

The dc3217by is a barebones system and will require ram and harddrive will only be using the system for xbmc so want to know which to get.Im swaying towards the zbox id41 but dont want to spend £100 on something not upto the job.I dont really want to go over £175 for something that im using for xbmc

Just sold a ID41 last week and only because I had no purpose for it myself. It works just fine with XBMC but it's a lot weaker compared with the NUC you are referring to. That one I also had for testing, complete with 4GB Ram (2x2) and a 128GB mSata drive, completed it with the Thunderbold Lan interface. Both devices did the job with XBMC but you understand that the NUC i3 was superior in many ways but the ID41 did the job also, so look at your budget and let that decide?
