XBMC ATV2 shuts down when starting video playback
ha - that crash is outside of xbmc - well that doesn't give any clue either and makes no sense.

What does that mean? Outside XBMC?

I'm sure there must be some sense hidden there somewhere Tongue

I was having the problem that XBMC just crashed whenever playing anything on my server. Discovered tonight that if I removed my nfs source and use smb instead and now it works great. Not sure if everything is fixed, but so far so good.

I uninstalled xbmc as per the instructions in the wiki, including removing the /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC directory.
Reinstalled gotham via command line.
Started Gotham, then quit
copied advancedsettings.xml and sources.xml to the userdata directory.
Updated to Gothan 13.1 Beta 2 via command line.
This should have given me a brand new, untouched install without any extra mods or setting changes.
Started xbmc.

Couple of days later and still no crash. I highly recommend that people give this a go.

XBMC is only a dylib (something like a dll on windows) on the atv2. The crash happens in a whole other dylib - meaning its not crashing inside XBMC but inside AppleTV software ... (it still indicates that its resource exhaustion which leads to unpredictable behaviour and nonsense crashlogs)

Is it CPU limitations, System RAM, Graphics RAM or Storage that runs out?

Anything I can do to lighten resource use? Uninstall stuff? Avoid doing many things at the same time? etc...

RAM / GPU RAM most likely ... answer - not that i know off ...

Installed the beta2 of Gotham with only one add-on and the Confluence skin; same problem as in my previous posts; crash to springboard within a few seconds. Only happens when streaming via Icexxxxx plugin. Streaming from local server: no problems.

Isn't there a slight chance that the Apple TV2 cannot handle the lastest version of XBMC anymore, because this version uses too much of the ATV2's resources?
In that case there are no other options than to revert to Frodo (or Eden) or to get another piece of hardware I assume?
A lightweight fork of XBMC in the future perhaps? For iOS and Android and similar devices....

Could be called xBMC Tongue

Why?
Newer Android devices run it perfectly well. The ATV2 is simply "getting to old"

But there are still some very good reasons to run XBMC on the ATV2 and not move to an Android device. I like the usability of the ATV2 much better then all the Android devices I've played with. Android is still a phone/tablet, touch screen OS.

Regards.

Doubtful. A lot of users such as myself are actually getting more stable use on ATV2 with v13, and v13 runs really well on the Raspberry Pi, which is also really light on resources.

There's an issue here, sure, but I wouldn't write off the ATV2 just yet. It might be that specific use cases are too much, or maybe it's some weird combination of things cause a bug. This thread makes it a bit too hard to tell, since there are a few different issues being reported all at once.
And there is another indication in my opinion which points away from a resource problem; streaming for a local source doens't give any problems. An important difference is that streaming from a local source doesn't use an external plugin...
It can still be a resource problem. Depending on how it is written, a python add-on can take up quite a bit of resources, and some have memory leaks. Some really crazy add-ons even try to do things like modify database files and all sorts of ill-advised activities. The fact that most of these crashes seem add-on related makes me think the issue is most likely with the add-on. Just because a more powerful machine can brute force it's way through working doesn't rule out the add-on being the problem.
Gotham keep crashing, reverted to 12.3 Frodo. Just crashes occasionally (crash2frontrow/reboot) but then usually plays the file fine afterwards. Only running stock XBMC Confluence with the auto-updater script, getting files from CIFS. (Wired network). (As a side note I tried the Amber skin and that one crashes all the time even on Frodo and even in the user interface...)
