I'd avoid using fake buttons if you're going to be using a mouse anyway.

I personally, usually just use a mouse when on the computer and editing. When on the big screen it's all remote.
I try... the best I can... to cover all forms of navigation that any given user might want to use (air mouse and such)...but yes... with that said... I do believe you are right in that it seems panel lists, fake buttons and mice don't fare well together. and by the way... I really appreciate your time and expertise that you have thrown my way. There are a few people on these boards that have put up with my noob questions and have guided me in the right direction and sometimes getting caught up in what you are trying to do or a problem you are having makes you forget to thank the people who help. So just want to say thanks.
