Is there any follow up to this

it seems like many people are having this problem

on Android 4.2.2 there is no mechanism to forman nand. And can only sit there with 'waiting for external storage'

...any ideas?

I had the same problem. 4.4.2 kitkat
I gave up on the SD card option for storage and used a USB Flash drive instead.
First I formatted it with my laptop and then used it with my MXIII.
Once you format it connect it to your android and test it.
It works well with Kodi.

I would suggest that before you re-install Kodi you completely uninstall it from your tv box

"What is the max size for a USB flash?"

I am not sure.
I used a 32G flash drive, as that was the max given for an SD card on my unit.
My MXIII recognizes flash drives as if they were SD cards.

You might be able to go larger if desired you could test it out.

I would be very cautious using an external hard drive though as it might put too much of a power demand on the tv box and cause damage.
