I am running an older XBMCbuntu I believe (12.04). Is there any way to upgrade or do I need to load a new live disk and reinstall from scratch?

on 12.04 no (you are ok until 2017), just use the ppas to upgrade xbmc to to kodi beta look at wiki HOW-TO:Install_XBMC_for_Linux#Upgrading (wiki)
