So obviously keep pressing CTRL and ALT and then hit the backslash key (the key with "?"), nothing happens. The bar(s) keeps staying.

Yes, I understand, but pressing that key (with "\" and "ß" and "?" on it) does not help, nothing happens, the bar keeps staying.

You're mixing up \ and /.

The key you want is next to brackets key, usually just above the Enter/Return key. You do not want the one with the question mark on it.

Hmmm, actually I would thing those two slashes look similar, but I should be able to see the difference.

Well, the key with the "?" on it has also the "\" (on my German keyboard). I have two slashes in total on my keyboard, that slash, "/", is on the key with the "7" and that one, "\". No other slahs available unfortunately.
